Ars: The strange saga began Sunday at the PyCon event in Santa Clara, CA, when Adria Richards, a developer evangelist for e-mail vendor SendGrid, overheard jokes being told by two developers sitting behind her during a session. The jokes were sexual in nature, she said. Richards proceeded to take a picture of the developers, then tweeted the photo and asked PyCon organizers to have a word with them.
The story ended with one of the developers getting fired, Richards getting fired, and an apparent denial of service attack against Richard’s personal blog and against SendGrid. “Anonymous has reviewed the situation and rendered judgment using their collective wisdom and experience,” wrote one anonymous poster in a manifesto. Could the story get any stranger?
According to Richards’ tweets and a personal blog post titled “Forking and Dongle Jokes Don’t Belong at Tech Conferences,” the developers in question were sitting right behind her at PyCon and made “jokes about forking repo’s in a sexual way and ‘big’ dongles.” (Richards herself apparently made a joke about male genitalia on Twitter, using her work account, several days before PyCon.)
OK, so for those who don’t know. Forking a repo is developer talk for “taking an existing project, and building your own version of it”. Repo is short for repository, which is a place where your computer code is stored. So by “forking” it, you essentially mean that the project is now going to take two distinct paths. OK, so is it sexual harassment to make a joke about “forking a repo”? I see the sexual innuendo, but is it worth getting your panties in a twist over?
Having a big dongle? OK, a dongle is another word for a USB flash drive. A dongle. Yes, it’s two letters away from the word dong. Is it sexual harassment to say you’ve got a big dongle? Come on bitch. Have a little sense of fucking humor. Was he holding his USB dongle close to his fly and waving it around menacingly? Would you say he was brandishing his dongle? Probably fucking not. You were at conference and you heard them say it behind you. Every single developer with a penis has at least thought about making a dongle and repo forking joke at least once in their careers. They just usually aren’t funny enough to say.
Are you telling me that this betch never made a sexual joke? She never said something like “it’s not the size of the boat, it’s the motion of the ocean” or some shit? Come on. Quit being so goddamned sensitive. I applaud the hacktivists who ddos’d her.
PS. Python is programming for fucking overly-sensitive Starbucks-drinking scarf-wearing hipsters and Affirmative Action hires. Real men code in C. Even for web stuff.
