“Why must we insist that every quirk of human nature and behavior, every feature beyond two standard deviations from the mean, must be named officially as an illness and then, too often, medicated?”
Let me first begin by saying that I am not a medical doctor. While I’ve taken basic colleges courses in biology, chemistry, and also psychology and philosophy, I am not qualified to hold a professional opinion in medicine or psychology. But. I consider myself to be smart, AND this is BrokenFilter, a place for anonymous rants where we don’t have to fear the political correctness police. So now that we’ve cleared that up, let me say that I believe ADD, ADHD, and bipolar disorders are fake.
So I posted the video about the crazy chick freaking out on the train. Her supposed brother claimed she suffers from bipolar disorder. But now you want me to feel bad for her just because there’s a technical name for it?
How bout this: I suffer from laziness, only doctors call it “laziness disorder”, and it makes me not want to go to work. Bleeding-heart liberal doctors all over the country decide to approve it as medically legit out of fear of being politically incorrect, because we have to be open minded otherwise we’re shunned (and sued) in this country. So now that I have this disorder, where’s my fucking sympathy? Why are we so afraid to call people out on shit like this?
I don’t believe in shit like bipolar disorder. Or, well I mean I believe some people are bipolar. But it is not a disease. “Disorder” is something different. Break down that word. “Dis” meaning not. “Order” meaning, ordinary, mainstream, regular, etc. Not regular. Unusual. That’s it. Your shit is not optimal, it’s not ordinary, it’s not desirable. It’s called a fucking personality flaw, not a fucking disease, and it should certainly not warrant legal repercussions. What if this was a trial?
“I’m sorry I murdered this woman, your honor, really. But I suffer from bipolar disorder.”
Yeah, well, now the judge is probably in a legal pickle. The fact that murder could have been committed by someone with bipolar disorder shouldn’t alleviate the person’s culpability from an ethical standpoint, but political correctness has surpassed in importance ACTUAL correctness and now the judge might have to factor this into sentencing. The person still made a free-will decision to commit murder.
You know what’s a disease? Cancer. Bipolar disorder is not a disease. Sure, it’s not a choice. But psychology is called a soft science for a reason. It’s subjective. Or else you can say she has a “chemical imbalance” in her brain that makes her predisposed to flipping her shit. But then at what point is any personality trait deemed undesirable also considered excusable? What if I have a sort of chemical imbalance that makes me hate Asians? It’s fucking nonsense and I’m sick of it. Same here for ADD and ADHD. I think it’s bullshit. It’s made up.
We shouldn’t rely so heavily on drugs. Adderol is a drug used to change your personality. It’s used to make kids more mainstream and more acceptable in popular society. You wanna give your kid a speech on how it’s OK to be different? A speech on acceptance and tolerance of differences in others? Fine. I think it’s OK to be different too. But then why completely undermine that and give your kid Adderall so that he fits a mold society deems more acceptable?
Someone with more skin in the literature game put out an article trying to get to the bottom of the same thing as me in the New York Times. That’s where I got the quote from the beginning of this post. It is a Q&A post with readers asking a doctor about ADHD. They asked the doctor how people are diagnosed, and of course, the readers are obviously bougie white soccer moms.
“I can’t shake the feeling that my just-7-year-old son has some attention challenges that are making his life more difficult. While he gets good grades in a challenging private school, has many friends, and is not at all aggressive, his teachers say he really struggles to maintain focus.”
Perfect example. This is what we call a First World Problem. The teacher said he can’t focus too well, so he must have a disease, right? No. You’re kid’s just a fucking spazz sometimes. He’s 7 years old. He’s thinking about video games and TV and baseball (if he doesn’t have an “obesity disorder” too that is) and stuff. The doctor responds that diagnosing ADHD is difficult, but I believe that to be bullshit because I have a ton of friends that KNOW they don’t have it but their doctors prescribe it anyway, because, fuck it, health insurance (and coming soon, Obamacare) will pay for it anyway. Doctor gets paid, medicine company gets paid, realists like me get screwed in taxes. Yes I know your kid might pay closer attention in school now, but at what cost?
Anyway, someone later asks if there are neurological reasons, HARD EVIDENCE of ADHD, and the doctor says no. In fact, there aren’t even psychological tests. The doctor just goes based on symptoms (or money).
“While neuropsychological testing may have some value for other learning disabilities or evaluating the extent of cognitive impairment from brain injuries, it is of little or no value in making the diagnosis of A.D.H.D. Otherwise, there are no psychological, medical or neurological tests that are useful for diagnosing A.D.H.D.”
OK, so now that we’ve got a licensed doctor telling us that there is no certain neurological reasons for ADHD, we can rule out the possibility of it being an actual disease, a quantifiable disease under modern understanding. Bam. Done and done. Zero hard evidence.
So could you just call it a chemical imbalance? Turns out that Adderall makes a few chemical changes in the brain, including changing the way dopamine and seratonin are released. In case you never studied biochemistry, dopamine is the brain’s way of making you feel good. It’s stored in the brain and not used until it’s needed. It’s used in the brain when you have sex, when you eat, when you learn, etc. You feel satisfied. It is also used in immediate doses by narcotics, which is why drugs make you happy. Then, when the drug wears off, you have too little dopamine left because the drugs used the dopamine freely and without regulation until none was left, and you feel the emotional crash. The dopamine eventually replenishes itself over time, but eventually dependence on drugs will cause less and less total dopamine to be produced. Ever hear drugs be called dope? That’s why.
So Adderall works by CHEATING the brain into behaving differently. This is totally fucked if you ask me. All in the name not of a disease, but of a disorder. So how long until mankind depends on drugs like these? We already do in a legal sense now. But let’s say that Adderall can only be made using some widget that is made with some natural resource that is now completely used up. We can’t make Adderall anymore. Or let’s say the global economy crashes and people can’t or won’t afford these pills? Well now that everybody’s gotta take them to stay on the same wavelength, no we’re all completely out of whack. Our brains no longer work correctly without them and we’re all tired and pissed off and completely unable to function at full capacity.
Now the same doctor from later goes on to say that ADHD is real and was not invented by drug companies. Now I believe drug companies benefit from it, but psychologists invented it. They just were wrong. The doctor doesn’t say that ADHD isn’t made up. He said it isn’t a made up disorder. Obviously it’s not a made up disorder. It’s a made up disease. A disorder is a disorder, a disorder is not a disease, and a disorder is not a disease because a disorder has no scientific, medical proof of existence. A “disorder” in the sense we are using it is a personality flaw that is well documented. The fact that ADHD treatment “medicine” like Adderall temporarily staves off the symptoms doesn’t mean that it cures a disease. And I therefore believe it should stop qualifying as something for which we should make legal and ethical exceptions. AKA, quit bitching about your disorder and knuckle up.
I say we should stop with all this nonsense. ADHD is not a disease. It is a PERSONALITY TRAIT that we have just deemed undesirable. Your kid’s got strep throat? That’s being sick, that’s quantifiable. Give the kid some medicine. Kid’s got ADHD? Don’t forsake nature. Toughen the fuck up and let him be who he is, don’t try to change him. There are people starving to death all over the planet and us stupid white Americans are worried about ADHD.
