After a member of the Dallas Cowboys died in a car driven by a drunk driver, I think we oughtta step back and ask why the FUCK a professional football player, who makes several hundred thousand dollars a year, would need to drive drunk. OK, even if the dude makes only $60K per year, which has got to be nearly double the average American, why does Jerry Jones not just pay for all of his players’ transportation? Honestly, it’s getting to the point where these players need to have babysitters.
I notice this trend mostly with the Jets to be honest. I remember like two years ago Braylon Edwards, who was a Jet at the time, got a DUI mid-season and started the following game. How the fuck was he not suspended? Now take a classy team for example. Last year, during a must-win game for the Giants against the Cowboys in Dallas, Giants coach Tom Coughlin benched his starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw for the first half for a curfew violation. Now that is a man who lays down the law. Benches his best running back for a simple curfew violation week 14 when the team is 7-7 against the Dallas Cowboys. Meanwhile, across town, Jets players are drunk driving, making foot fetish videos and HBO specials, calling eachother out in the locker room, having coaches trip opposing players mid-play, posing for GQ, just generally running the team like it’s the 80’s/90’s The U. WHERE IS THE DISCIPLINE?
I’ve got to blame the players because they’re supposed to be college-educated adults, but owners and GMs should know that they have to play the role of parent to most of these idiots. They should be providing all transportation for these guys. You go out to a bar (probably a strip club but whatever)? OK, we’ll get you a towncar to take you home for free. Leave your car there. It’s not rocket science, people. The NFL is a bajillion dollar a year industry, you’d think they would be able to get something like this right. And the same goes for other sports too, especially baseball since guys like A-Rod made $14,406 for every PITCH SEEN. That’s right, every time the pitcher throws a pitch to Alex Rodriguez, he makes $14,406. And that’s salary, that’s not even including sponsorships.
I’d like to say that players should take more responsibility for their own actions, but it’s unlikely that that will ever happen. It’s the exact same situation going on with all the unsafe sex going on. People should take responsibility for their own actions and either remain abstinent or purchase their own contraceptives. But it’s unlikely that will ever happen. No, what’s probably going to happen is the federal government is going to have to provide contraceptives and abortions for free because people are too fucking stupid to just be responsible. Likewise, the NFL is going to have to provide transportation to players for free because too many those guys are too fucking stupid to handle their own affairs. Truly a sad day, not just for the NFL, but for America.
