CNN: At a coming-out party for its upcoming PlayStation 4 console, Sony leveled its guns at rival Microsoft’s Xbox One device and fired until the chambers were empty.
During a press event Monday night at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Sony hammered home key points about its new gaming system: Sharing games will be free. If people want to sell used games, that’s fine. And a near-constant Internet connection, meant to monitor game usage, won’t be required.
Let me start by naming the consoles I’ve owned so that you might have a background. I started with a PlayStation (PS 1, but the original big gray one). Then I went to XBox, then I got a PS3. So I’ve been in both camps. I loved my original XBox when I got it. It was really the first online networking system. I used to play Halo 2 online all the time. But the PS3 blows the XBox360 out of the water. I’m sorry. All you 360 dudes need to nut up and admit it. It’s faster, it’s rendering capabilities haven’t even been reached by game programmers yet, while the 360’s ceiling has been reached years ago. Plus, it’s online system is free. Meanwhile, you have to pay to go online with your 360. Even if you don’t play games online, you need an XBox Live subscription to watch Netflix on your 360, which is totally fucking gay.
And it looks like it’s going to happen again with PS4 vs the XBox One. Microsoft in all its evil glory decided to fuck with gamers and make us pay more. For one, the XBox One is going to cost $500, while the PS4 will be $400. Second, you need to be connected to the Internet. You need to “check in” online once every 24 hours or else the console won’t let you pay your game, even if you just want to play in offline mode. I don’t know if this is a data mining thing or what, but it fucking sucks. I don’t always want to play online, and even if I did, I shouldn’t be FORCED to play online. Not to mention the fact that you’re probably going to have to pay for XBox Live again, so yeah, they’re fucking extorting money from you to play the game you already bought.
Third, they won’t let you resell or rent games the same way. The game can only be shared with a limited number of friends. If you want to take it over to your friend’s house, you better be sure you have a share left. It’s kind of like Apple’s iTunes and how you can only license your songs on like 4 computers. The games will be the same way. For those people that have no friends that won’t be a problem but for the rest of us, it’s an unnecessary way to force people to buy the game. Not to mention selling and renting games, and buying used games. It’s going to be a fucking mess.
I’m also going to assume that XBox copied the shit out of PS3 too. Blu-Ray capabilities, Bluetooth wireless controllers (THAT ARE RE FUCKING CHARGABLE). The thing that pissed me off most about the 360 was the battery packs. You have to buy new fucking batteries for it, while if your PS3 controller starts to die, you just plug it in. And the plug is a USB plug, not some proprietary garbage that Microsoft uses. Plus it copied the WiFi that the PS3 had. All in all, the PS3 was just a far superior machine to the 360 and the PS4 will be similarly superior to the XBox One.
