CNN: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that a proposed ban on semi-automatic firearms modeled after military assault weapons has no chance of passing the chamber, but he wants to ensure a vote on it will take place. The proposal to update a similar 1994 ban that expired a decade later was one of four measures passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee in response to the Connecticut school massacre in December.
Reid, D-Nevada, told reporters he won’t keep the proposed ban in gun legislation heading to the full Senate for consideration because including it would guarantee the measure would be blocked by a Republican filibuster. The ban proposed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, and fiercely opposed by the National Rifle Association, Republicans and some Democrats would get fewer than 40 votes, Reid said, far below the threshold needed to defeat a filibuster or pass the Senate.
Tell you what, Senator Feinstein. Why don’t we just let California secede and become the California Republic again? Fuck California. We don’t want it. If you want your free abortions and birth control and no immigration laws whatsoever and a complete socialist state, go right ahead. Heck, annex Washington and Oregon and Hawaii while you’re at it. Meanwhile, New England, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland can all become a new country called The Northern Union. Washington DC will be annexed by Maryland. Pennsylvania is too partially midwestern to want to join that alliance. Meanwhile, Illinois and Michigan will become a country, and other states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Minnesota will consider joining it. The rest of the states will continue on the the United States name. The wild card here is Alaska. You’d better believe that the California Republic will be courting Alaska because it’s got so much oil. Alaska is one of the most profitable states. All four American unions are going to make it feel like the hot freshman being recruited by every sorority on campus. The foreign territories, meanwhile, will sold off. Google will buy Guam. Venezuela will buy Puerto Rico.
That’s how I see the US in 20 years. And I’m totally fine with that. Break it up.
