I have worked in restaurants, bars, and catering. I have seen the ins and outs of food service. I know a lot about food preparation and service. I also know how food is supposed to taste. A well done steak is a travesty.
I didn’t eat steak until I was in my 20’s. The reason behind this is that my mother made all of our food “well done”. I thought all steak tasted like shit. It turns out I like my steak medium rare. I like to TASTE the meat…..not just the charred remains of an animal that was halfway through the cremation process. I didn’t know any better. My mom was always worried about the family getting sick from under cooked meat….so well done wasn’t an option….it was well done steak or no dinner (i’m fat…no dinner was NOT an option!). While I appreciate her loving and caring approach to how she prepared our dinner…..I have to disagree with her taste in meat temperature.
I had a great upbringing. My parents worked hard to give us everything we needed. BUT….If I was to have ONE complaint….it would be denying me the gratification of a medium rare filet mignon at a younger age. Just not fair.
